and how can I fix it...?
changing the power antenna on my 97 4Runner when I needed to disconect the motor and take it apart to remove that broken nylon piece still inside... as soon as I disconected the motor housing from the wheel well the Kenwood KDC 715S went into freak mode...no display and no reaction to any of my franitc button pushing... the unit still has power (the motorized faceplate still moves to the open position, like its ready to receive a CD) I've checked all the fuses and even replaced a few that almost looked bad... all to no avail..
Any help will be appreciated... I need to get out of the dog house as soon as possible...

Do you see a reset button? With the faceplate open look around see if there is a little hole that maybe a paper clip would fit in. If so push a paper clip in and reset it. If you cant find one I would try disconnecting the power from the stereo for a minute see if that resets it. Let us know if you need more help and how you come out.  Dont wanna see ya in the doghouse

...and the easiest way to disconnect power is to remove the negative battery terminal.
Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

or pull and replace the right fuse, probably the one that is on the same circuit that the dome lights are on
electronics run off of smoke, when you let the smoke out they stop working

its possible your HU was grounding through the antenna for the most part, and now its disconnected.  it can still function slightly off the crappy factory ground, , but it needs more, , , try running a new ground wire.

Did you short the remote wire to ground as you removed the plug?

What Alpine guy says makes perfect sense too, if you also disconnected the antenna as you noticed this problem.

one last thing you may want to check is this... with the deck powered up take a DMM and check for 12V on the chassis of the radio... this is indicative of a fused open ground inside the unit itself, which i've seen Kenwoods do on occaision....

Check your antenna.  I think this unit may ground using your antenna.  Just screw your antenna back to the truck and see it that fixes your problem.

if this unit is only getting ground thru the shield of the antenna then it's hooked up wrong.... and you would see 12 volts on the chassis of the radio as i recommended he check for.....

If all else fails, it may be a coincidence, but the Kenwood MASK decks have a tendency of the tape between the chassis and the faceplate going out. From the way you are saying this, with it laying down like its accepting a CD, and no display, sounds to be the symptoms of this. The KDC-715S is an older model. From what we have experienced with them, seems the tape lasts about a year or so.

So it may be a coincidence that you were changing the antenna and it went out, or this may not be your problem. Try pulling the unit out and checking your power and see if you still have good connections and power. If so, then more then likely, thats what happened, and if you really like the deck, then you can bring it to a Kenwood dealer and he could send it to Kenwood, or as we do, have a tech in town repair it. Its usually about $100 - $120 dollars.

You may also want to try to reset it, as someone has mentioned, sometimes this is a quick fix for this and could last a while if it even works, or may last a couple days.
