I wanna upgrade my factory system to something decent. Nothing over the top, but I want better sound quality and the ability to really give it some volume when I feel like it. I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to car stereos, so bare with me...

A guy I work with offered to sell me his Orion 225-HCCA for $125 Canadian. The problem is that it's close to 15 years old and has been sitting in his closet for for almost a decade. He's pretty trusworthy, so I'm sure that if it didn't work properly he'd give me my money back.

Now I know this thing was pretty top-of-the-line a few years ago, but how much does that still hold true? Basically what I'm asking is whether it's better to buy a brand new amp in that price range($100-200) or go with this better quality used amp.

I have that same amp, along with the 250hcca and 2100hcca. They are all great amps(my 250hcca is not working right now). I don't know what $125 in Canadian is worth compared to American money. I will say this, if you are going to run all of your mids and highs with it and are using lots of speakers so you can drop the ohms low, it will put out LOTS of power. They are very reliable amps that give very few problems.

Orion HCCA amps are some of the best, most reliablem amps out there. Since this one has been sitting for so long it is probably in very good condition, I would jump on that deal.
Also keep in mind that they can be ran to very low ohm levels and can produce many more watts then they are rated for.

$125 CND is about $103 US.

I should add that as far as use goes, he had it installed in his car for about 5 years.

I would jump on that FAST! Especially since you say that he would give back your money if it was bad. I would buy it from him and I don't even know him.
