This is probably a stupid question, but I've noticed different amplifier ratings based on the voltage that the amp is seeing (i.e. 40 watts rms at 12.5 vdc or 70 watts rms at 14.4 vdc). How do I tell what my voltage is in my system? I'm assuming that because my vehicle is pretty new, that my electrical system is putting out 14 volts? I have a multimeter, but wouldn't know what to test to find out. Thanks in advance.

Test the voltage at your amps' positive terminal with your meter.

You will operate at 12 volts with the car off as it's coming off the battery.  Most alternators produce 14.4 volts while the engine is running.
