Is it necessary to connect the illumination wire in your stereo?

no, not necessary.  Some vehicles provide a control wire right in the stereo harness, others do not.  The use of it all depends on wether you want the display to dim when you turn your headlights on or not.

what if you dont use a harness, how do you test for this wire? and what are the wires that **** up your car if there not connected (not using a harness) like some lights dont turn on and you lose the door buzzer.

In my opinion, if you don't use a wiring harness adapter, you are being very foolish.

what vehicle is this for?  need some info first before we can say if you can skip some wires.  And yes I agree for the feww dollars you have to shell out for a wire harness kit, it ends up as good money spent.

Why?  Because 1) you won't be damaging your vehicle by cutting into the factory wiring. 2) less chance for error or stupid mistakes since all wires are clearly labelled on adapters. 3) easier to return the car to stock when and if you decide to sell it or scrap it and want to pull your system out first. 4) much more professional install technique instead of amateur hack job. 5) less chance you'll cut a wire that needs to remain intact.  6) much easier to change something later.  And there are other reasons I'm sure.

In order for the radio to dim, do you have to ground the illumination wire, feed +12v into it, or what.  My HU is a Pioneer DEH-4700mp

Ah for the first time I slightly, repeat slightly disagree with DYohn. I was in this business before there were harnesses and while I agree with every point DYohn made I've found my installation guys learn individual car's wiring quicker if they have to figure it out themselves. Of course it also gives you a chance to save the customer $20 if you are close on the deal. I always give my customers the choice after explaining the situation. As for do it your selfers, always use a harness.

There is no such thing as free installation!

Actually I agree with you completely.  It was your last point I was fixed upon.  Stereo Illumination Wire Connection Necessary? -- posted image.
