i wanna use this battery http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=140-450 as a backup. i know that i could just buy a BUB but I WANNA know if i could make this work. i know i could use a relay to have it hooked up to the main battery only when the ignition is on to charge it. my question is, will this even work, and if so, how do i wire it? i was thinking i could wire the postive tab of the backup battery with a relay (to turn on with ignition) to the positive of the main battery in my car.

I didnt even look at your link. But you cannot use a 6 VDC cell to power your alarm. It must be a 12 VDC battery.

Regardless of what 12 volt battery you wish to purchase, the AH (amp hour) rating is paramount.

ie. You cannot expect a 1.20 AH battery to supply enough current to sustain your alarm system, vs a 7.5 AH battery.

Pay the extra, for the measure of time you will get.

ok yeah the reason i said 6v, is bc i aCCIdentally put a link for it thats y i double posted to fix it. how would i go about wiring one of these batteries?

Look for a part called a DEI 520T-- it comes w/ a little .7 Ah battery that you can replace w/ that thing...

Run another wire off the alternator straight to the + of the battery. Ground the (-) and wire in the alarm (+) to the back up battery (+). Make sure that you fuse the BUB with a 30 amp fuse from the alternator and also fuse the connection to the alarm system.

Could this battery be treated as a secondary battery such as the optima sealed batteries? In this set-up you could probably use a battery isolator and just connect the alarm to the secondary battery. An isolator charges both batteries when your car is on; when it's off it will only discharge the battery which is connected with the accessory turned on.

To wire an isolator you have to connect the alternator to one isolator post, each positive post of each battry to separate isolator post, and I think and ignition wire as well (depending on car model).

I tried installing one but it wasn't for my car since it had another post for an alternator s terminal of some sort so I just wired my blue top in parallel to my stock battery. They say in these post that you will minimize battery life by connecting two batteries in parrallel that do not have the exact same specs but I'm going to college and I don't have the money to upgrade.

Be sure to fuse accordingly.
