So I know the tach sense wire is supposed to go to the "check connector marked IG," but what and where exactly is the "check connector?" 87 4Runner.

Try:

Tach Signal

BLACK - AT IGNITER (or Coil )

Can also be found BLACK/ white at pin IG- in the diagnosis connector under hood.

or at the ecm located behind the glove box.
