diodes across relay coils

could someone make sure i have this right...

to place a diode across the coil of a relay, i would connect +12 and the anode to terminal 85 and i would connect ground and the cathode to terminal 86 on a standard SPDT relay.

if this is correct, please let me know.. if not, please correct me...

No the other way around, Positive to the cathode and ground to the anode. If you hook it up that way the diode is going to pass most of the current and the relays coil will not get enough current, plus it would defeat the purpose of the kick-back diode.
