My girlfriend recently purchased a new stereo for her 1999 grand am and asked me to install it for her. Having had minimal experience with car electronics I reluctantly agreed.
I have done my fair share of research prior to attempting to install the stereo. From what I can tell the grand am has no switched power wire in the stock harness so I have to tap into a ignition wire apparently? If this is the case why does my after market harness have an acc wire?also what wire should I tap into, where is it located and how do I gain access to it? I've seen people mention brown, pink, red and orange wires, which one is the right one?
Thanks,
Robert

The yellow wire from the car is the switched wire that the factory radio used. You should too!!

if you buy a stereo wiring adapter it should allow you to make all of the necessary connections on the workbench and then all you need to do is plug in and enjoy.

I was under the impression that the yellow wire was constant power. So I should just go ahead an wire the red acc wire to the red wire on my wiring adapter and I will be good to go? That's good to hear, that simplifies things quite a bit.

Test the vehicle radio loom; one wire will be constant 12V+, one will be ACC switched 12V+.

itsyuk, I was trying to nudge our OP in the direction of actually testing, of course the other way would be to buy a loom adapter kit from say Metra or Scosche etc. what our OP should have done in the first place.

Go to bed, I don't know why I woke up at 4:17, it's 5:40am right now, I'm going back to sleep!
