Gotcha
Why would a car sub not sound right in a home theater application? Same frequency output. BTW it is a square kicker (I think its a solo baric L7, but it is in storage so i cant check right now). So I could get a different sub but the box i built has a square hole :/
Here's another amp:

if i'm remembering the sub correctly it calls for lots of power. Does it sound bad if i give it 200W when its max rms is 750W?

First, 750watts max = about 280watts RMS
Second, car units are optimised for trunks or vehicle interior not room sized.
Second discussing domestic amps is not germane to this site, I don't have enough knowledge of product or retail outlets in the US to help you.

If it's a home theater application, haven't you got a home theater sound set up with a sub?
If not, look at a complete system.
IMO some of the higher-end computer speaker systems are pretty good - they have remotes, optic inputs, etc at a reasonable price.
Otherwise, as before, just some domestic sub - and no batteries - especially wet lead acid. It's a much cheaper solution anyhow...
I don't think square speakers are good anyhow - I'd use the same arguments as I used in the days of rectangular reflector headlights...
