newb push to make switch with relays

Well, I went and bought some diodes and and tried the 4 relays diagram and still was not able to get this to work. Any other ideas?

You existing setup should work of you have the correct switch. If you have a SPST relay and an ON\OFF rocker switch, and it is wired so that ON switches the 12v of the relay coil, then you should have a relay that engages as long as that switch is on and you have a 12v supply. FLIP the switch to the OFF position and the relay unlatches and there will be no 12v to the lights, I don't see how it can be more complicated than this.

Hi I believe this thread also describes what I'm trying to accomplish as well. I want to install some LED strips under the hood, to be turned on / off via a relay. With a magnetic switch to control the relay, energizing when the hood is raised. Would a diode across 86 and 85 be necessary for this to work properly? And can I run a single power source to both the magnetic switch and pin 86 of the relay or should I find a separate sources for them? Thank you for your excellent site!
