A short inside the amp usually, or it overheated and never reset.
Is there a reset button or small breaker button to press to Reset it?
The protection light means the amp was overheated, shorted, or too much current was drawn (short in a speaker) from the speakers, or the line input was to high.
Disconnact ALL power and ground lines first, including the REMOTE lead, see of that RESETS the amp. Next Disconnect one speaker at a time, then power the amp back up. Lastly, Disconect the inputs, and do it again. If this does not work, then the amp is probably bad.

Is the protection light on indefinitely?  Or does it just come on every now and then go away once you turn off the stereo?  It it's intermittent, when you first turn on the stereo does the protection light come on immediately, or will it work for a few seconds/minutes?

I believe the light stays on Im not sure i will find out tomorrow. He's running two amps with only 10gauge going in and 8gauge going out to the amps could this be the problem?

do you mean 10 gauge input to a distribution block and 8 gauge outputs to the amp?  Or were you talking about something else?  Cuz the 8-gauge should be the input and the 10-gauge should be the output.

Unless the two amps are really really small (like less than 200 watts total) I would recommend using a 4-gauge cable as the input, and an 8-gauge cable as the output to each amp.

Many amps have undervoltage and undercurrent protection, and this might be what is causing the "protection" light to come on.  Also, for an amp with overcurrent protection, an unsupported speaker load (anything less than 2 ohms stereo, or less than 4 ohms mono for most 2-channel amps) can cause the protection light to come on as well.  Though usually when the protection light comes on the amp's output stops--I wasn't sure if you meant to say that or if the amp's light really is just turning on even though the amp may be playing normally....

What is the make/model of the amps and subs he using and how are they wired? If the total ohm load is too low then that could put the amp into protect mode as well.

It could be a few things the amp is bad all together, the ohm load is too low like wvsqiirrel said, it’s not getting enough power (wires gauge too small), sub could be bad and putting amp into protection. Please list your setup so we can further assist in diagnosing the problem. But when you turn the amp on and it goes straight into protection mode it’s not generally a good sign. Also did it ever work ?
