The truck: 99 yukon 4dr 4x4
The story:
I was getting in the truck and I hit the unlock button on the driver door and nothing happened.
But wait...
Whats that smell?
Smells like burning wires, yup theres the smoke.
So I disconnected the battery instead of watching the 'ol fella suicide himself.
Backtrack:
when i got this truck there was some weird happenings that were all but cured by removing every trace of the remote start/alarm/keyless entry setup voodoo that came with truck.
Symtom:
on occasion when i would press the unlock buton on the drivers door the dome lights would flash instead of doors unlocking. Which turned into attempted suicide the other day.
So to me the most logical approach is to ask you guys if i missed something.
I took dash off & steering column cover for inspection. When i was removing & replacing fuses on the side of the dash and got burned by the metal cased fuse, the doorlock/power seat fuse. top left in this image.
-Relpaced, it gets hot wont blow. With fuse removed, all seems well.
- No evidence of the wire that was smoking.
So the Questions:
does any of this sound familiar?
Does this sound like installer door lock voodoo, or general motors voodoo?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
P.S.

Now that the door lock fuse has been removed, if i press the unlock button on drivers door the dome light lights up. Like its the switch for it or something.

My friend had his Hummer H3 do something similar, except his interior door switch assembly literally caught fire as he was driving!
Anyhow, have you tried a GM forum or a Yukon forum for help?

99 Yukon / Tahoe can be equipped with or with out factory Remote Keyless Entry. The way the locks are done is different. Look at the sticker with all the 3-charachter codes on it. If you see "AX3" it has RKE. I suspect it does, because of the interaction with the dome light. RKE modules interface with the dome lights, non-RKE trucks don't, they just have a timer.

That "silver thing" that was hot is the circuit breaker for the locks. If it was hot, it was doing its job by protecting against a short. If you have AX3, there is a door lock relay, and an RKE module. The module and door switches control the relay. The wire color that the breaker protects is orn/blk. There's some hints. For guys like myself that understand how a GM lock system is laid out and functions, and have an idea of what the components look like and are located, this is pretty straight forward troubleshooting by process of elimination. For others with less experience, it may be tough.

I give you credit for writing an entertaining post. Kind of fun. Its usually pretty stodgy around here.
