What is the purpose of the little red light that come with my Avital 2200 Alarm? Is it to provided information to me, to warn away potential intruders, or both?

I ask this question to determine where to put it. I sure can't find any clever places to mount it, and I do hate drilling a hole in my dash!

Ciao!

It's for both. It is to let people know that you have a security system and also for diagnostics of the system.

Read the instructions. I does both things, it's primary function is to warn people and let them know that the vehicle is protected by an alarm sistem. It also gives you a lot of information during programing . I'm not familiar with that particular model since I don't work with DEI crap.

For those who told me to read the instructions ( I read both the installation guide and owner's manual), here is what DEI says:

LED: A red light mounted inside the vehicle at a location determined by the installer. The LED indicates the status of your system and also reports triggers or faults in the system or sensors.

I think it was already said, but the LED is an indicator to both you and the would be intruder that your vehicle is suppposedly protected by an alarm system of some sort. I like to use a more elaborate 3rd party/aftermarket multiple LED array(but don't hook these up to the LED terminal on your alarm, it will fry it) to let people know that my alarm system is much more effective and protective that an alarm system with just a single LED.
LED's also provide diagnostic and alarm status information.
IF you don't like drilling holes in your dash, try putting the LED into a defroster vent on the dash so its only visible when its on, or do what everyone good installer does and drill the hole in a blank switch or indicator knockout, or any other small piece in the dash that can easily be replaced if need be.
