I have purchased an USED 1999 Civic EX Sedan.
It seems to be with the security system because it has an LED on the upper steering column cover, a disarm switch on the dashboard lower cover, and the control unit near the steering shaft. It also has fuses as described by the installation instruction on a web site I found.
However previous owner didn't have any information about the security system. He didn't have remote transmitters also. He was not the first owner of the car. He said that the car is without keyless entry system. Probably the first owner didn't sell the car with the transmitters.
MY QUESTION is
What part do I have to purchase, or what do I have to do to activate the security system?
Probably it is easy to ask a dealer but as usual the parts from dealers are expensive, so I want to know whether there's another way to activate the system.
According to the instructions on the web site,
the system seems to be activated by the transmitter, doesn't it?
If so, I would try to find tranmitters on ebay, or somewhere, not from honda dealers.
Please provide me information about this.
Thanks,

First if there is an led other then on the radio then the alarm/keyless module is aftermarket. The dealer won't know anything especially aftermarket equiptment. You will need to find the module and figure out what it is, otherwise you will be SOL.

auex,
Thank you for your reply.
The web site I found is following.
http://www.handa-accessories.com/civelec00.html
I guessed the system is not aftermarket because this site says that the securiyt system is the same accessory that any Honda dealer in the US sells, and the positions of the LED and the disarm switch are exactly the same as what the instruction says.
Actually I have never used this kind of system before.
Is the security system activated by the transmitter for keyless entry if the system is genuine?

see if you can find a model number on the main unit....once you have that, you should be able to get a owner's manual

I'm pretty sure that's not a security system...i had a similar one in my car the led is on the left side and there is a switch...the led comes on when the car is off and stops when the ignition is on ...all it is a flashing led....there should be a small module under the dash under the steering coulmn...i ripped out mines and put in an alarm/starter.

bobk,
Thanks for your reply.
I found that the box near the steering shaft is a control unit made by HONDA.
I am looking for a remote for my civic on ebay now. Some sellers have units for 1999 and 2000. Others sell ones for 1996-2000. Also remotes with CANAD # are sold. I guess a remote for 1999 or 2000 works for my 1999 civic, and a remote with CANADA # also probably works for my civic. But no clue.
Do you know anything about how to select remotes?
