Do I need a Relay or not?

I have two amps, an MTX 4160 four channel (4 x 20 rms at 14.4v) and a Kenwood KAC-715 mono (1 x 100).  I was going to add an Audio Control 3XS equalizer in the mix.  Is a relay necessary for the remote turn on leads or will I be O.K. without it.  I have a Pioneer DEH-P7600MP for my head unit.  If I do need a relay can anyone send me a diagram.  Remember I am a fireman so type slowly and be patient.  Thanks for any help guys.  Charles Abbott.  If you prefer to e-mail me direct it's ceabbott2@hotmail.comCharles Abbott

You'll be fine, as long as you lose the EQ. J/K I just hate EQs. You should be fine but are pushing the limit of the remote turn on wire. If you would like a diagram then here you go. Certified Security Specialist

Thanks for the info Guys.  I am really just using the EQ to up my rca line outputs.  Don't really need the EQ but I was hoping to help out the "floor".  I did have a couple of questions regarding grounds.  I know , I know I have looked at what seems to be hundreds of posts.  First I have already grounded the head unit to the existing factory wiring.  Second both amps are far apart and the MTX amp is grounded seperately from the Kenwood and the capacitor, (they are grounded together).  I placed another ground from the battery to the firewall, (same gauge as the main power lead (4).  All grounds are ground down to pure metal.  Everything sounds great, but I wanted to know should I run a ground cable from the mtx amp to othe other components that currently share a ground even if everything sounds o.k.?  I guess I want to make sure I am not damaging any of my components.  I realize everything should be grounded to the same point.  So with this in mind do I need to run a wire from the head unit back to the amp grounds?  Second, when testing for resistance I unhook the power supply and place one lead on the positive supply and the other on the ground?  I apologize but I am trying to follow as best I can.  Last thanks to AUEX for the diagram.  Is the 12 volt lead going to lead(87) can that be powered from a 12 volt constant or does this need to be a 12 volt switched lead?  Thanks again to all of the Audio/Video gurus for taking the time to spoon feed me.  Charles Abbott.Charles Abbott

ceabbott, it does not matter whether or not the 12v comes from constant or switched.  The relay will only be engaged when the radio is on (and the radio can only be turned on when the key is in) so it doesn't really matter.  If it was me, I would probably use switched power just so that power is not constantly running to the relay, but either way, it won't hurt anything.
