I have an EQ and 2 amps to hook up.  So can i just use the remote turn on from the head unit or do i need a relay?  If i dont need a relay then how would i wire the amps and the EQ up to the remote turn on wire?

well a relay will protect your remote turn on but it should not be neccesary . but if you want here is how to do it.

pin 85 positive input from radios remote turn on

pin 86 ground

pin 87 constant 12 volts fused at ten amps or five

pin 30 output to all the components amps eq  etc. pin 87a not used

now if somethign happens you will not damage the radio you will just blow the fuse you add on to pin 87

mecp certification is not always needed. I have it and it has not helped me out at all. my experience out shines it.

Like djfearny2  said for that setup you don’t need to install a relay.

When would you need a relay there and how do you know?   The same setup with a power antenna? (and no antenna output on the deck)  What about number of amplifiers to be turned on?

Just take the remote turn on and solder or crimp all of your connections together. As far as a relay goes I like to use on when ever I have more than 4 connections to my remote turn on.  But if you have a power antenna and no antenna turn on then defiantly use a relay.
