i have a 1991 mercury cougar-xr7 with a amp and 12 inch speekers installed in the trunk.I am having a problem with the fuel pump relay failing.the relay is no in the amp circuit at all.the relay is mounted in the trunk also.I have been told that the vibrations from the speekers is the cause.my question is has any body ran across this and if so is there a fix for it.

I dont think the vibration would cause the relay to fail. If you had a huge amount of bass it might cause the relay contacts to open and close but very slightly and this would not harm the relay. As far as the cause I dont know. Have you had more than one fail? I would look for something else (eg. a screw pinching the pump wire to ground, low voltage from the audio system, or a pump going bad). These relays have a very long life span and you should not have a problem with the relay unless it is the one that come on the car new (only then if very high miles).
