although the install was done dangerously incorrectly (not fusing the primary at the battery) that had nothing to do with the problem you experienced.... i am a Kenwood warranty centre and see this problem often (very often) with this series of amps.... they made the ground foils far too thin in the power supply of these units and they have a tendency to "fuse" open as the unit is being pushed hard and begins to really draw some current... i upgrade the ground foils in the power supply to allow for a greater current draw whenever i get these units in for "no output"......

you'd think some engineer at kenwood would realize that ground is just as important as power.......

^^^ Thank you for that kgerry.  The voice of experience is more valuable than gold!  Sounds like our original poster needs to take his amp back wherever he bought it, hopefully it is still under warranty.

Thank you all for your professional advise.  I am taking the amp back for a different one.  Not sure what yet.

What do you have in mind?
That's my opinion. Take it, leave it, or correct me.

How much do want to pay?  What authorized dealers are in your area?

That's my opinion. Take it, leave it, or correct me.

I do not really trust those fuses that amplifiers come with - two of my 5 channel amps blew and started to smell like my truck was on fire but they never blew any of the fuses although the power supply MOSFETS and some of the output ones where blown / shorting out - wierd - but I guess the current draw when the transistors shorted was not great enough to blow the amps fuses but great enough to fry the amp...

I paid a buck and a half for the kenwood Kac-7201 so I don't really think, at this point, that money would be the the object, but rather, is what I'm getting going to be worth what I paid for it.   I mean I can go to a flee market and get an 800 watt  no namer for 50 bucks, and make it work for a year or I can go to a kenwood dealer and get a named brand for a couple hundred bucks and won't even hear it come on.  go figure!
