Ive just installed a used DEH 2700 into an otherwise stock 96 Neon.  All 4 channels seem to intermitently cut out completely.  The deck stays on and keeps operating as if all is normal, except no sound.  Opening and closing the drivers door seems to have something to do with it, but it isnt consistent.  It also seems to be aggravated when I turn up the deck and get distortion from the stock speakers.  Any help to troubleshoot this would be appreciated TIA.

Disconnect the front speaker left speaker from behind the cd player and retest. If it still continues, keep disconnecting speakers and try one at a time. If the cd players amp detects a dead short from say a bad speaker or a speaker wire grounding out, the amplifier will go into protection while the cd keeps playing. You also need to verify this by playing the fm tuner to see if it does the same. If it is happening on am / fm as well as cd, then it may be the problem I have described above. If it is cd only, then the unit is the issue.

Top Secret, I can tell you but then my wife will kill me.

It does it on the tuner as well.   Am I looking rewiring the whole car or is it just the crap speakers?

Ok I think I figured it, using the fader all the way to the rear no issues.  Right front door speaker isnt working at all so I figure that is the problem.  Thank you for your help.
