I bought my daughter a remote starter for christmas thru a local shop, installed. A CodeAlarm brand. She also had an aftermarket radio installed at the same time. From the get go she has had trouble with the remote. If she starts it remotely she looses her tach and gauges, speedo stays on. Shut off the car and restart it with the key and it will still have no gauges. She has to restart the car with the key anywhere from 6 to 15 times to get everything to come back on. The installer is leaning toward it being a Pontiac problem and suggests taking it to a dealer. I really don't think a dealer will help on this. I've read here that Pontiac Grand Prix's can be an issue with remotes. I know taking out the factory radio causes the door and headlight chimes to cease  but I'm wondering if it can also cause the problems I described with the remote start? Is the computer for the car effected by a radio replacement? Is there just something else component wise that needs to be in the system to make everything work? The installer is offering to remove the system and refund the money but I really want her to have a remote starter and going somewhere else might just be the same issues so I'ld rather fix this. I had thought of buying the remote setup at xmas and doing it myself, boy am I glad I didn't! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Rick.

If the radio was  installed with the proper parts your chimes would be retained. If the shop was trying to save you a buck by doing it half arsed then I would not consider them to be professionals. If it only does this after remote starting then you have your problem and the cure would be up to you.

As the above poster stated there are two options when replacing a radio in a 2000 or newer GM. Option a) is to relocate the factory deck or b) is buy the $150.00(CDN) harness(GMCO) and then your car's electrical system will be the exact same as with the factory radio.
There are multiple thoughts on what exactly happens if you pull the radio and not use the relocate or the GMCO. Regardless of exactly what happens it is widely accepted that it screws with the electrical system if the proper parts are not used,
That being said if the gauge issue only occurs after a remote start then that is the problem and I'd take the installer up on the offer to pull it out. Then try and go someplace else to get it done.

I have had another Grand Prix with pretty much the same problem. I don't believe the aftermarket radio would be to blame, but the shop could hopefully re-install the factory radio if they didn't cut off the original plugs. The cause may be the module used to interface with the transponder system in the vehicle. If the shop used a module that taps onto the Class II data bus in the vehicle and tells it there is a valid key code, I would suspect this is the problem. Have the shop disconnect the Passkey III interface and as a test, stick a good key into the ignition and then try the remote starter. I'm betting the problem will disappear. If so, then they need to either use an extra key in a box, universal transponder interface or a similar one that uses a wire loop at the igntion cylinder.

Find out what kind of bypass they used for the remote start. I did a 98 chevy s10 recently with a int-sl bypass which taps into the data wire. I was having all kinds of wacky problems with it.  Some of them resembling your problems you are having. All the gauges would shut down completely. As soon as i would unplug the bypass, start the vehicle back up, everything would kick right back on. Come to find out, the bypass wouldn't work on a 98.......so i guess, what i'm saying, is that depending on the bypass, there is a chance that could be causing the problems.

I also think it's the bypass module. Find out what kind he used and post the information.

As said by all above, the bypass can be the issue. BypassKit has specifically mentioned problems with the gauges on '04 and up Grand Prix when using a data bypass, which is why they came out with their PKU-GM.

This is why I subscribe to many forums. They're the best places for real information. All these responses are great. I will be contacting the installer to go over everything and show him what I've collected here. Thank you all and I will post a reply as soon as I have this resolved.
