I have a Prostart remote starter in my 99 Intrepid.  My key tag has a red led light that flashes on when I remotely start the car.  The led light is constantly flashing and started my car on it's own, without me pressing the button.  I changed the battery but this didn't make any difference.  I disabled the starter so it won't start on it's own again, but what could be wrong with the key tag?

The switch is defective.   Does it have more than one button on the remote?  Does the start button feel like the other buttons?  Or does it not click when it is depressed?

There are two buttons on the remote - I could never figure out what the second button does!  Neither button makes a "click" - I just press it and the car starts, and nothing happens when I press the other button.  There's a toggle switch under the dash that I flip off to disable the remote.  What switch are you refering to?  The switch in the car or the switch on the remote?  Do I need to get a replacement remote or do I have to get a whole new remote starter system?

I am talking about the switch under the button of the remote. Usually when they fail they do not move as far as the other button. Does the unused button have a further travel than the start button? If the switch is found to be defective they usually have the same identical switches under each button, you may be able to remove the broken switch then remove the other one and put it in place of the start switch. This will require someone with some decent soldering skills. The switches will melt if heated too much. If you decide to try it I can provide detailed soldering instructions to help eliminate melting the switch.
I will need you to take the remote apart and describe the switches to me. 2 legs on each, 4 legs on each, and do the legs go through the circuit board or are they surface mount components?
You should be able to find a new remote for the unit. They have some listed on that popular auction site for 20 dollars plus shipping.

I think I'll go for the auction site - this thing is so tiny and I don't know anyone with soldering skills that good.

Thanks so much!

Does it have any brand name? Or on the back, maybe an FCC ID number, or even a 1-800 phone number?

the system is a early model similar to the autostart 1200 serise. You simply need a new remote. Look for a AS 1200 remote (which is very common) and you will have what you need.  we sell them programmed to your car for $39, cash and carry is $29. It takes a experianced installer 2 mins to program the remote to your car but car and remote must be in same place. Meaning you have to bring the car in. If you want you can ship out your old remote to have it repaired, we fix those all the time. This time of year 6 to 12 a week, in the winter months close to 40 -60 per week. it is a common problem as throse remotes get old. we charge $10 to fix the remote. so if you are inclined and can afford the postage......

let me know

Remember if you buy on f-bay make sure the remote is new, also what Mr. Idiot was trying to explain which I think you grasped was that the switch on the REMOTE has failed, not the one in the car, also a new remote will have to be programmed to your R/S so make sure that's done, remember he might call himself an idiot but many of us think he's pretty smart so take whatever advice he gives
