i have a 2004 toyota tacoma that has the factory installed keyless entry/alarm. it seems like this is the crossover year for the tacoma to the new body style but this one is still the old body style. i am having a hell of a time trying to figure out which remote is required because the truck didn't come with anything except for one key due to the fact it was a theft recovery.

it looks like the fcc id # should be bab237131-056 but the more i search for fobs with this number it seems like the descriptions all say up to 2003 tacoma and the other tacoma fobs i find are for '05+.

does anyone know what is supposed to work for this truck?

i've tried the dealer but they tell me that the canadian model of tacoma for that year didn't come with keyless entry so it's not in their parts system. my truck is a u.s. import from oregon.

it looks like i might just have to take a trip south of the border to find a toyota dealer there.

The remotes for the 2004 and older model are rectangular, and should have a Lock and Unlock button on the front, and a small, red, square Panic button on the back.
The 2005-up Tacoma uses Toyota's newer-style remote, which is much more organic looking, and has the Panic button on the front.
But, although I've seen a few of those Tacomas with factory keyless entry, I've never seen one with a factory alarm.
Why do you think you have a factory alarm? Are you seeing a rectangular panel in the dash, with a red light, that says "SECURITY?" Does that light also have another small opening next to it, on the same panel?
If you do see another opening next to the security light, that's the microphone for a glass break sensor.............and a good indication that it's a dealer-installed alarm, not factory original.
I think it's called a VIP3200 or something like that. (VIP is for Vehicle Intrustion Protection.) It's a Toyota alarm, but installed by the mechanics at the dealership.
To further add to the confusion............there's a VIP alarm for cars that already came with factory keyless, and in that case, you'd be shopping for the factory remotes that come with any Tacoma.
I think (maybe, not sure) there's also a system for Toyotas that never came with any remotes at all, and so this alarm comes with its own remotes.
I don't know how (maybe look at the Tacoma forums?), but you probably want to figure out if your Tacoma ever came with factory keyless in the first place.
Good luck!
P.S. Have you already had your truck inspected for the frame recall? Before you invest money in remotes, have the dealer inspect the frame, because they are buying back a lot of these trucks.

it didn't come with the factory alarm until i upgraded it according to this link

http://www.customtacos.com/tech/index.php?article=12

my truck's frame looks like new so i'm not worried. it's mostly the '99 and older that are bad but i've heard of up to '02 having the problems.
