As far as I know, they will play only Jump drives.

From what the specs say, as long as it is formatted in FAT 16/32 and doesn't draw more that 500mA through the USB, there's no reason it shouldn't work.

I think the power consumption is gonna be your problem, you'd have to use a hard drive with a separate power supply, and that means using an inverter.

Life moves pretty fast; if you don't stop and look around once in a while; you could miss it.

That would help out a lot, if of course there were 2 USB ports on his radio.

Mute is negative.   According to Alpine's tech suppport, that unit will play a hard drive.  It must be a single platter drive.  New large laptop drives, (250 and 300 GB) use multiple platters.   It as stated above needs to be formatted with FAT or FAT32 partitions.

Try one of the USB powered laptop externals. I have the 120gb version of this drive http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8744736&st=western+digital+external&type=product&id=1202648989707 hooked up to my Pioneer. Works great. Those are meant to draw only 5oomah.
