Needing a tach is very dependent on climate. In Minnesota and Wisconsin I know its a matter of necessity, unless you want about 20 service checks the first really cold day of winter. Any Chrysler vehicle works horribly on voltage sense. Mid to Late 90's GM vans like the Astro or Silhouette I stopped hooking up tach wires. This is due to a surprisingly large number of ignition modules that went bad on these vans. Either the part is just crappy and the remote starts give mechanics a place to point a finger, or they are just a really sensitive part. One other thing I discovered to work on cheaper remote start modules such as delta starters is you can introduce a tach signal though transference by coiling your unstripped tach wire about 20 wraps around a spark plug wire. Only seems to work on the cheaper starters but this is what I used on those vans to avoid finger pointing.
