The last few cars I had already had these built in, they were nice, and had large plastic covers. 100s of thousands of miles and no problems.
My latest car does not - I don't want to use the one that comes with the alarm as I've seen them rust etc quickly (I'm in the midwest). Back when I installed we used mercury switches, but I often park on hills and I'll be using this for alarm and remote start safety.
Any thoughts on an aftermarket switch thats a bit more "beefy" than the one in the DEI alarm box? Or should I just buy an oem one and mod it to fit my car?
Thanks,
Chris

Mercury switches work just fine when they are properly adjusted. Magnetic reed switches are another option.
Ideal - cmon dude, add to topics in a useful manner, not stuff that is obvious.
Story - Phzzzt! Hey, what happened?! ... Isn't it obvious?
Moral - Never dismiss the obvious.

DEI put Harrison switches in UK product,  that and a moisture proofing spray seems to do the trick in our damp miserable climate.

Thats what I did to mine. No reason for it to rust if it is done every couple of years.
