want to become mecp certified. i don't have my basic but have heard that advanced isn't much different. i have been doing car audio stuff (head unit, amps, components) for about a year and a half. i took an electronics course in high school so not totally ignorant. the only place that hires for car audio is best buy and that far away so i haven't been employed. would it be possible to take the advanced portion?

as far as I know, you have to have at least 1 year of on the job work experience and have passed the basic installers test to be able to take the advanced test.

From what I understand you have go go through with the basic MECP to get the next level. I don't have my MECP and don't think I will anytime soon either.  The certification doesn't tell you that your a good installer or that you have a good understanding of electricity IMO. What it does tell me is that you have a good memory and can memorize lines, formulas and possibly install some basic equipment.

I like that answer Velocity Motors. Well put. I don't have mine and I been doing this for to many years. Just paper nothing more. The great installers are in people not in the paper.

yea you have to get your basic and then show proof  of working experience to take the advance. I understand where you guys are coming from , but it never hurts to have another credential under your belt

If your willing to go through the test and again work under a master MECP to get the papers, then go for it. IMO getting a paper with a passing grade of  70% on a basic test ( I think that's passing grade ) doesn't necessarily tell me that someone knows what they are capable of. Put them to work and show me that you learned something. I bet that I can show someone more that they can ever know from one of those basic tests.

I understand the concept of the MECP test, but some place put too much weight on this piece of paper and not enough on the competentcy of the individual.

The MECP certification is kind of like a college degree.

By obtaining one it shows that you have inititive, yet it doesn't mean you will actually be any good at what you do.

what you learn in the MECP program helps more in troubleshooting than anything else. it doesn't tell you how to take a car apart without breaking something.

It's just like the MCSE courses from Microsoft. Windows NT had SO many "Paper MCSE's", that when the 2000 MCSE came around, it didn't mean anything until people started to realize that particular cert actually meant something. Speaking from experience, the 2000 MCSE was a PITA.
It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

Why not be good at what you do and have papers to show for it? If i wa a customer i would respect and appreciate that. Do the Best. How much time does it really take to get certified? Especially if you know what you're doing already. I'm just sayin'.
