even easier than a multimeter (although it would be my first choice) is to take a 9 volt battery and touch the speaker leads to it. You should hear a popping (perfectly normal and unharmfull) from that speaker. If there's no popping, IT'S POOCHED!!!. Good luck.

True, but I'm pretty sure a speaker can be blown and still pass the "speaker popper" test.  I know it's not very likely but technically isn't it possible?

My train of thought is that the VC is fried...if it's fried, then can current still pass through it? I thought that it couldn't...but if the surround on the speaker has come loose, then yes, it is possible that it would pass that test. I'm curious to know.
