i bought a 68 mustang that came with this radio. i want to use it since it was made aftermarket for mustang (has mustang ponies and everything), but can't figure out what wire is what. there are two stickers on it: the first one says Custom Autosound manufacturing, inc - model lmusa-01. and the other says Sound Creation (Unical Enterprises, Inc) - model SCR-8501S.
here are the wire colors:
- red
- yellow (only wire with label - power antenna)
- orange
- black
- green
- blue
- grey
- white
- brown
- violet
if you have an idea of what wire is what, i'd appreciate the info.
thanks in advance....

Do you have a digital multimeter? Does the radio have a rotary volume control with a click at the left side of the cycle? Is it a digital or analog tuner?

thanks for the response. it's digital, has rotory volume with a click on the left..... i don't have a multimeter... with those colors, would you think it's common ground?

The wire colors are not enough info to answer that question. Do you know someone that might have a meter?
I have an idea on the wire colors, not because of the colors, but because of the pattern you have listed. I would feel much better if you could get a meter to verify a couple of things before you try and connect the wires.

Set the meter to the diode test function. Should be the only little picture on the selection knob. Looks like the top image here Turn the radio on, set fader to the middle. attach the black meter lead to the chassis of the radio. Red lead to the black wire. I am sure this is the ground wire but let's check it anyway. It should read near 0.000 if so label it as ground. Next attach the black lead to the yellow wire of the radio. Touch the red lead to the other wires one at a time. It should read very near 0.000 on one of the wires, now turn the switch off and the reading should no longer be near 0.000, if so label it as switched power. Black lead back to chassis of radio, red lead to each of the remaining wires one at a time, let the meter settle down on each wire, post your findings here. There should be 4 or 6 wires that read about the same. these are your speaker wires. Now reverse the leads, red on chassis, black to each wire, post those numbers also.

here's what i got..
red on chassis:
orange = 1882
blue = 000 (makes the meter buzz)
violet = 354
green = 1 (i don't think it reads anything)
white = 000 (makes the meter buzz)
grey = 354
brown = 1 (i don't think it reads anything)
black on chassis:
orange = 1
blue = 000 (makes the meter buzz)
violet = 352
green = 1 (i don't think it reads anything)
white = 000 (makes the meter buzz)
grey = 352
brown = 1 (i don't think it reads anything)
black and red wires seemed to work as you suspected

Did you make sure the fader was in the middle position?

Which of your earlier posts shows the wire colors in the order in which they appear on the back of the radio?

Does it have a digital tuner or an old analog tuner with a needle to indicate what frequency the radio is on?

it's all digital, so i can't tell what frequency it's on... and their is no specific order the wires are in. they come out of a round loom....

Try powering the orange wire too.  Place a 1 amp fuse in line with the orange wire.  If this makes the unit light up,  you need to turn the volume all the way down and set the meter to DC Volts, ground the black lead to the chassis of the radio and touch the red lead to each of the wires.  Post the voltage readings here.
