i've got a '03 Ford Ranger that came with an in-dash 6-cd changer.

Long story short:

The arm comes out and up to 'grab' the disc.  After it moves up, it's supposed to deploy three plastic "claws" to hold the disc in place while it's spinning.  These 'claws' are located in the spinning portion of the arm.  These do not deploy at all.

How can I fix this?  Thankz in advance.

Was this the initial problem with the unit?

As far as I know, yes.  I purchased the truck a month ago.  It worked the first couple days, but after that, it never worked again.

Is there a gear that controls that?

I have no idea, I have repaired several of those units but have never seen one with that problem.  I never had a reason to investigate the operation of the spindle.  I can only guess that there is a solenoid that pushes upward on the bottom of the levers, thus forcing them out the top and over the disc.   That deck has a boatload of switches and sensors to let the deck know that certain things are in place and it is OK to perform the next operation.  If I happen to get one in the shop in the next few weeks, I will look around and see if I can get a better idea of how it works.

Any tips on how to take apart the changer unit?  I've taken the changer OUT of the deck, but then I see LOTS of springs that I don't wanna screw up.

I see alot of those that either dont read the CD or the door doesnt open to Load/Eject the CD. How hard are the repairs on those units...Obviously depending on what your doing...Just in general. 1-10 diffuculty.

If the unit will not eject or accept discs, it usually has a disc out of place inside of the unit.  If a disc slides out of place, it will not allow the elevator assembly to move up or down.  These are pretty easy to repair.  Simply look at all of the discs and find the one that has shifted and move it back into place.  Reconnect the unit and test it.

If I get a unit in, I will look and see what all is involved in disassembly of the changer.
