how to make an air intake scoop

whats up everybody, im pretty new to the fiberglass world. ive done a few small projects in the past but this time i need a little technique help. im trying to add an air intake scoop to an xbox 360. it will be about 9 inches wide by 5 inches deep and about half an inch tall. what i really need to know is what would be a good way to frame it up so that it doesn't look cheesy when i lay the fiberglass down. i was thinking i would use 1 inch pvc pipe cut in half to frame the edges and then just stretch the material over that but i have a gut feeling that it wont turn out the way i want it. im not going for a really elaborate design or anything i just want it to look ok. the end product will be painted black. ANY help or suggestions about anything are appreciated so thanks in advance.

You can frame something like that out of cardboard, its cheap and easy. Your look of your finished product will have more to do with your sanding/finishing then the actual frame. just take your time and i'm sure it will end up just fine.Dustin Rockney

i know that, i just want to do as little sanding as possible. i hate sanding bondo because it takes me forever because i wont stop until its nearly perfect. truthfully i never even though of using cardboard. are you sure it wont get soft and change shape when i start with the resin?

for most small projects its fine, but if your worried about that you can cover it in packing tape, then the resin cant soak in. you can go one step further and add a release agent so you can pull the cardboard out when your fiberglass dries.Dustin Rockney

i think im just going to do the opposite and make a reverse mold out of clay since it is just a small piece. what should i use as a release agent?

you can buy commercial release agents, but you can use cooking spray, wd-40, or wax paper. anything that will keep the fiberglass from sticking to the mold.Dustin Rockney
