im pretty sure i grabbed the manual right off this site (the12volt is a wonderful place) but here is a direct link-
http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/587032/791xvinstall.pdf
pages 42-48 are what deals with the system learn routine
i highly appreciate you taking a look, im also afraid i will have to do as you suggest and take it to an installer place.   thing is, this is the last function i want, i have everything else setup perfectly. for me to fail at this point and just pay $20 to get that one feature doesn't sit well with me... i would much rather get it done myself.
and like i said, i know im doing the procedures right- but instead of getting 5 different choices, i only get up to 3 flashes... so something is definitely not coherent between the manual and the actual device....

Ok! here's what you do! This procedure is assuming your AUX button on the remote is unused!

Instead of using two buttons to activate channel four program it to the aux button alone, makes things alot easier!

here's the procedure!

open a door, turn the ignition on and press the valet switch six times and hold on the seventh press, when the six chirps are heard press the AUX button, you should hear a long chirp, this indicates success!

Next to program the latched setting

Again open a door, turn the ignition on then off, press the valet switch once and hold until you hear two chirps, this indicates menu two, then press the valet switch twelve times and hold on the thirteenth press, when you hear twelve chirps you are in channel four programming mode, toggle through the settings using the unlock button.

Two chirps- Latched

Three chirps- Latch reset with ignition

Four chirps - Thirty seconds timed

For your application i believe you would want the two chirp setting.

The lock button turns on the one chirp setting which is validity

P.S some models of the 791xv differed as the later models came with dedicated horn outputs the only real change, all programming remained as they were originally. Just so you know. Cheers

son of a...
there ARE different models of this system, and they dont specify other then the year they were made. the manual i was using was dated 2003, and CLEARLY was '10' pushes for ch4 settings.
like i said, i KNEW i was doing it right, i KNEW the manual was wrong in my case.
and sure as doodie, i find a manual dated 2005 and it says '12' pushes for ch4!!
so i go out to the truck, try it and its perfection.
then, i come here to see t&t posted the answer at the exact same time i found the problem too. THANK YOU TT ANYWAY! thanks to everyone who helped, this was so frustrating and for once it wasnt my fault! lol
here is the updated manual- http://www.directeddealers.com/manuals/ig/viper/N564V_07-05.pdf
far as i can tell, the 2003 manual is for the 791xv remotes that do NOT have a P button on the back of the keychain remote. mine DOES have the P button, and now i know why my old manual never said a peep about this button.

I've been using Audiovox since 2001, so my DEI/Viper days are long behind me, although I've installed/repaiRED / reprogrammed a few over the years for friends.
i wanted to ask. any reason youve been using audiovox? are they special in anyway?

well in any case its working great now.
i hit AUX+lock and my computer fires up in the truck, auto conntects to my wireless network, and im throwing the new trailer park boys special on it now. all from my couch. what a far cry from pulling the harddrive, hooking it up to my desktop, doing the transfer and then eventually put my harddrive back out in the truck (it was like a fricken ipod, and ipods were the reason i went with a computer!)
now if i could just get my wireless N to connect better... at 100ft from my house, its having a tough time.   1mb connection, and it dops out constantly.   i am surprised it reaches at all though, wireless g never stood a chance.

i wish i could edit my posts... but anyway
i fixed the weak wireless signal problem.   flashed my netgear router to DDWRT and used these settings i found on dd's website forum-
RX ANT = Left
TX ANT = Right
TX POW = 35mw
i was getting 6KB/sec if it would work at all before... now im getting over 1000KB/sec and its rock solid. so a 350MB movie file that would have taken 1.5 hours to do before (if it didnt dropout) now takes a couple minutes flat. pretty freakin nice for a $23 router....
