I have a 2005 Scion XB and I have a hard time understanding the words in the song on the radio. First let me say that I listen to oldie's. That means that I don't to listen to it very loud. Yes I'm old! I just want it to be clear. I also don't want to spend a lot of money and I was thinking of upgrading my speakers to fix the problem. When I had XM I had the same problem. so I'm not sure if that means it's the radio or the speakers or both.
Thanks in advance

speakers shouldn't be too much of an issue since it is a fairly new car, but you will get better sound quality if you replace them. Also have you had a thought about getting HD radio at all? If you listen to AM radio at all, which most oldies listeners do, they can see a world of difference with HD.
Also I know it sounds a little mean, but when is the last time you had an ear appointment? I'm probably 10 years younger than you, but I have the same problem at times when I am hearing people talk. They have to be in front of me, not across the room. Mostly because of listening/building systems too loud i can’t understand words in song on radio -- posted image.

Yes, in all seriousness you should get your hearing checked.

I had it checked a couple of years ago. They said everything was ok.
Thanks.
Actually, I don't listen to AM. Is HD really worth the expense of the radio? which speakers would you suggest

Well just upgrading the speakers might not be all you have to do...It might help some...But i think w/ an upgrade to the speakers...You should probably drive them off an amp...! You will probably be pretty satisfied w/ the end result...Is that the only Problem your having is w/ the words...Meaning the highs/lows sound ok...? It is mostly the mid-range your having a problem w/...?  Do you have a budget on upgrades...Will help w/ some recommendations on equipment...But again i would recommend a speaker upgrade w/ an amp...!

Dude... This is NOT your cell phone. PLEASE type all the words out... You have as much space as you need; you are not limited to 160 characters.
It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

The Scions have crap speaker systems in them from the factory. They all do. They're econoboxes, and Toyota really doesn't want to dump any more money into frills than they have to.
A clean little set of coax speakers or possibly components, and you'll be MUCH happier with your tunes. I listen to "oldies" too, and my system (I have realized lately) does a much better job on all my adult contemporary stuff than I ever planned on it doing. I find myself just driving to listen... :)
Seriously, though... Upgrade the speaker systems, you'll be glad you did.

I don't know anything about speakers and amps. When I was a kid a 9 ounce magnet was twice as good as a 4.5 ounce magnet. As far as budget, the (cheaper) less expensive the better. If I have to spend a $100. or $200 I will, but would rather not
