i have a bosch spdt relay. i'm trying to set up the starter kill as shown on this website. when i run the 12v ignition to 85, ground to 86, and turn the key to on, the relay doesnt switch but I see power through the relay.

i tested this relay later with a 9v battery and it clicked.

do I need a resistor in parallel to run some of the current? is that whats wrong?

correction. 12v to 86, ground 85

still no go

What kind of car is it? Where did you get your ignition power at and where did you ground it at. You don't need any extra parts, you just need to hook it up correctly.

Ignition to 86, starter key side to 30, starter starter side to 87a and alarm's GWA* to 85. for safety's sake place a 1 amp diode (1N4004) across the coil terminals, 85 and 86 with the diode band to 86.

GWA refers to a wire that shows ground when the alarm is engaged; Ground When Armed. GWA on most US alarms is ORANGE but check!

Can't advise any more because you haven't told us either what car or what alarm. If you are just using this as an immobiliser with a secret switch, take 85 to ground via your secret switch. Except someone like me could probably find it in 3 minutes or less.

97 subaru outback sport. ready remote 24927.

getting my ignition power from the harness. same harness the starter is tapped into

grounded at the starter, but i grounded it on the car to test it as well and it didnt do anything either. i've got some testing tools at school i'm going to use

everywhere i said starter in my last post I mean the remote starter

When you turn the car to the "ON" position with the relay connected straight to ground, does the relay click at all? It may be possible that you are connected to an ACC wire and not an IGN wire so that the starter wire is broken when the key is in the "ON" position but it is not broke in the "crank" position.

Folllowing on from Kevin, have you a) Checked that your feeding 86 with a genuine ignition, not acc and b) It's the main ignition not a secondary which will also dump when the key is turned to the start position.

solved it. just had to program my remote starter to be a constant ground when armed. the same wire controls dome light, rap, etc...

and I guess when I was testing it earlier with a wire to straight to ground I wasnt doing it right or something
