From the shops that I've worked @ in California, most pay a base pay + commission. Typical commission rates are about 40-50% of the labor total.
Examples: Head unit install = $30, commission = $15
          Alarm install = $100, commission = $40.

Average would be between $2,000-3,000/month for a busy shop from what I've seen for shops in California.

That really depends on your experience and your shop.

It all depends on your area a friend of mine that I used to work with. Got a job at an install place and they pay him on  a fixed rate of $9.00 hr no comission or anything. But thats here in AL.

Where do you live Roadshop? Its not just CA, you just have to find a busy shop in your town that does good work. Custom work=$$$ I know Circuit City doesn't do any custom work.

I have been installing for almost 8 years now and I know there is some money to be made. I work a full time job(not installing) and install as much as comes my way. Sometimes,I make almost as much in my two days off as I do at a fourty hour a week job. The thing to keep in mind is that ,for me, it is seasonal. In the summer I make most of my money and in the winter I mostly get the people that just want a deck swap or an alarm here and there. I live in TX. Here there are alot of "ballers" and they  want to spend money on there ride. I also think it depends on what all you can do, as far as what all you can install. If you can do full custom stuff there is a greater advantage. The shops out here charge two, three, even four hundred dollars to build a box. Just the plainest little box uphostered to match will be outragous. Boxes are difficult, but not that difficult. I hope you find the nice paying job you are looking for. Try the shops that are local and privately owned. Sometimes they are more appreciative of an installers skills. With over two years exper. you shouldn't have a problem.Good luck!!!!!!!!!!
