The AM-FM radio/CD player in my 2007 VW Passat station wagon does not have an auxilary audio input.  It does, however, have a cable with a 12-pin connector in the gloove compartment for a multi-disk CD player.

Is it possible to connect the audio output of an iPod to this cable in some way and thereby listen to the iPod directly through the radio?  If so, does anyone have the cable pin-out, wiring schematic for doing so?  Any problems?

I'd say save yourself the money and get a metra wired fm mod. Those work great from my experiences. ANd a lot cheaper.

An FM modulator is a device that takes a high quality audio signal and broadcasts it onto an FM frequency that is injected into your radio via the antenna cable.  The sound you get wil be only as good as your FM radio can make it.  Granted a wired FM modulator does MUCH better than their wireless equivalent, known as an FM transmitter.  They do still leave some sound quality on the table.  The aux in adapter will allow you to get the best sound possible.

And if you do use the following device you will also need to purchase about 20 dollars worth of antenna adapters

You could also use the USASpec PA11VW6.  Gives you ipod control and an AUX input (RCA) for about $139.

Hope this helps, seems there's a lot of options out there.

Good suggestions, but the VW dealer from whom I just bought this '07 Passat wagon tells me that removing the radio for direct connect is a lot of work.  They charge more than $100 to do it.

Anyone know if it's possible to connect the headphone output of an iPod directly to the audio-in portion of the cable for a CD changer that's laying lose in the gloove compartment?  Would like to find the schematic on this radio, and hopefully, fashion a connector for input to that unused CD cable.

Thanks for your insight and help!

The radio will not switch to the cd changer unless the cd changer or the aux in piece I linked to (or a similar device) is present.  Any reputable stereo shop will install that device for around 100 dollars.

Mike T: What do you mean by simply +1?  (Your last response)

Platinum "i am an idiot":  Ya, I thought maybe I could fake out the CD player by putting in a blank disk, thereby opening the circuit for audio input from the lose cable in the gloove compartment.  No luck - the CD player said "disk error" and returned the radio to the previously tuned-in broadcast station.  Smart folk, these German designers.  Guess I'm just a shade-tree mechanic trying to outsmart them and save some bucks for the few times we take long road trips and want to hear books and maybe some music on an iPod in the car.

Thanks for your help
