On a lot of the one way remotes there is no component to easily pull frequency off of.   The two way remotes should have a transciever that you might be able to get info from.  The bigger companies sometimes have their own markings on the components.

Why? But just out of interest the international standard is 413-433mhz and now 900mhz either AM or FM

There were quite a few systems on this side of the pond that were 315mhz for quite a few years.  I believe everything has migrated to 433mhz to fall in to the international ISM band.

Quite right Kevin. Basically the new "advertised" (there I'm not falling into that trap,) 1 mile range product is usually 900mhz.
And now for today's possible urban myth.
Many years ago when they launched the Voyager in the UK Chrysler gave the motoring journalists the keys at Dover Harbour and said there you go, take the tunnel to France and have a drive. As you've probably guessed, none of the remotes worked. Dover harbour has the World's most powerful civilian radar, it controls the whole English Channel the world's busiest seaway from Norway down to the Bay of Biscay. It was jamming all the remotes!
