I am a newbie and appreciate all info. I have an 02 Tahoe and would like a head unit with more function, but note some problems. First, this is the CD with seperate (remote) tape player and also seperate rear seat interface/controls. Also has OnStar. Is there a head unit that would be able to interface with all these seperate items?
ps. if anyone knows of a good shop in the Kansas City area,   I appreciate the refferal. The guys at Circuit City and others just don't know much.

You will need a couple of interface peripherial devices for what you want done. It is possible but the peripherials will end up costing you about $ 150.00 at least + installation. It's not a cheap way but it does give you the end result that you want. Here's some information about the system you have:

Thank you for the reply. Of course now I have more questions. when adding a rear seat entertainment system, how do most installers wire the sound? Through a FM modulator?
As I understand the wiring information, this sytem functions judt like computer serial bus, for example a USB port. Everything is assigned an ID by the master unit. So the interfaces allow you to hook up anything to the master, or is it the other way around. The interface creates a new master and allows you to hook up existing modules like OnStar? Thanks for answering my questions.

2002 Tahoe is not Class II. They started in 2003 for the SUV's and trucks, with the exception of the Bravada,Envoy and TrailBlazer.

Yea class 2 only started with the big suvs and trucks in 03.  The On-Star in and of itself is a pain and depending on whether or not your factory radio has RDS, you might not even be able to interface with the On-Star system.  Might want to ask Karl from PAC about that, I'm sure he knows the answer.

Do you still want to be able to use the rear seat controls?  Or does that not really matter to you?  If it doesn't you can just hook up an aftermarket deck but you'll lose that rear seat functionality.  I am not aware of any way to interface an aftermarket deck with these rear seat controls, although I guess it might be possible but I've never heard of it being done with aftermarket decks.

As for a rear seat entertainment system, there are a few different ways to hook up the audio.   A lot of times people are just adding on to a factory system, in which case you usually use an FM modulator.  PAC just came out with a new adapter that adds traditional RCA inputs to a factory GM radio, so that's what you should use if you keep the factory deck and add on a mobile video system or something like that.

Best way to hook up the audio with an aftermarket deck would be to get an auxilliary input adapter for whatever brand head unit you have (all the manufacturers have them nowadays).  Basically what these do is add RCA audio inputs to the back of your aftermarket head unit.  Usually they eliminate the cd changer port but some of them have additional models that cost about twice as much but retain the extra changer port.

Again, I'm not sure how all this stuff would interface with the rear audio controls or if it's even possible.  Just out of curiosity, do you have the Bose system in this vehicle?  And what about the RDS?

Don't have the Bose system, not sure what RDS is. This is the 02 Z71 and there are no factory stereo options. Looks like a 7 speaker system. I have replaced all the speakers (except the little ones in the back hatch) with focal and the factory sub with a JL. Getting a surprising amount of altenator noise, not sure why.

RDS is a feature of the factory radio. RDS has nothing to do with the vehicle. Its just an easy identification so you know the vehicle is Class II.
We thought about retaining the rear controls but decided later on not to. Kind of useless since the aftermarket radio can only play one source at a time.
The AAI-GM12 currently works in Escalades and Denalis since they have a 6 disc in the console. But works for all SUV's and trucks IF the vehicle has XM installed.

You'll know your vehicle has RDS if it automatically displays some station call names in addition to their frequencies.  RDS stands for Radio Data System and the way I understand it, it's basically a way that some stations send additional info to your radio like call names.  I've heard that in some places they'll also give you traffic alerts if there's an accident ahead.

I always thought that just because a system has RDS, doesn't necessarily mean the vehicle has the Class II wiring.  In fact I was working on a 2003 blazer xtreme a couple days ago and was gonna do a radio in it.  It had the RDS system but once I took the factory radio out, the door chimes still worked, so I'm assuming that it did not have the Class II system in it.

Where's the alternator noise coming from?  The sub?  The speakers?  Any of them in particular?

Only the premium bose system has the door chimes built into the bose amplifier. The regular bose systems have the chimes built into the radio and both play through the left front speaker. However there are some vehicles that still have a seperate chime module but they don't chime through the left front speaker but some where under the dash or kickpanel.

The alternator noise can be heard through all door speakers, not sure about the sub. Weird part is that I still hear it when the radio is off. The amps are supposed to be off as well, right? Then it occured to me that the radio may never be truly "off" with Onstar. The system is set up so that it works even when the radio has been turned off, the volume knob continues to function. Mostly I just hear the noise under load in low volume situations, but it will dissapear when the truck is parked, making diagnostics a little tough. I changed from the speaker level input to a line livel input with converters today. Might be slightly better, but not much.
Pretty much gave up on the head unit. Seems like chanbging is too big a hassle.
