I got a 97 pontiac grand am, the front two speakers are 4x6 and the rear two speakers are 6x9 and I am trying to find a good set up for my car. I've been researching speakers and stereos for cars for only a few days and I really don't have much of an idea of where I should start... any help would be great.

I suggest you grab your favorite CD and head out to your local car audio shops.  Listen to what's on offer and choose the ones you like best.  :)

Well I have some plan on doing that as well. But from what I have been reading if I buy a sub and 6x9s that have bass they cancel each other out or something? And I've also seen somewhere people suggesting to get some kind of kit so I can put in 6.5" instead of putting in 4x6s.

Your first point makes no sense, and yes, 6.5" round speakers tend to sound better than most 4X6's and opens up a lot more options.  Go shopping and find a brand you like, then come back and we can talk more.

Hah well I never said I was going to make any sense :-P. Is that an option for me to somehow get 6.5s in place of the 4x6's that I have?

I'm my view bro. It depends what kind of music u listen to. I listen a little bit of everything but from my experience for SQ I say RE audio. For serious bass kickers solo x or fi btls. Also depends your budgets. You should update components for that rockfords or RE Audio XXX component series. Really good stuff. All depends on budget and music.

Also, I went into the local audio shop and..they don't even have anything set up for me to listen to and the guys who worked there are horrible dealing with customers and left me quite disappointed so I left..but anyway I found some speakers I liked at bestbuy and I looked them up on Amazon and I also found some 4" speakers that are designed to fit into a 4x6 slot there two, Here is the 6x9 and here is the 4"
