I've a 2008 Scion xB with Scion Security and Glass Break Sensor and a 1990 GSX Eclipse with OE security and no extra sensors.

In neither can I identify a dedicated trigger port for adding sensors.  Am I right in thinking the appropriate technique would be to tap into a door open switch wire (probably driver's), so that if the system is already armed, the alarm will go off (otherwise the signal would be ignored)?

Also, in order to increase security reasonably for both vehicles, what would make sense for each:  Tilt sensors?  Impact sensors?  (Glass break sensor for the Eclipse ?)

Thanks for any insights :) -- Trevor

PS. I've noticed the xB glass break sensor also triggers if anything strikes the car body -- doesn't have to be hard enough to cause damage.

The problem with using a door trigger is the interior light will come on when it is triggered. How about a hood pin, is there one?

Great idea -- the Eclipse definitely has a hood release sensor and the Scion xB almost certainly does also, so if the hood is released with the alarm armed, the alarm will fire.  I'll have to study the schematics to identify the wire.  (Hopefully not a CAN connection on the Scion :().

Thanks very much.  Any quick thoughts on what sensors are valuable to have these days  (tilt? impact? glass break for the Eclipse? other?)

Try the 507 by DEI, it's a tilt sensor that actually works well....

PS. Sorry to bug you yet again, but is there a good shock or glass break sensor I should also look at?  According to DEI, their tilt sensor is a good complement to one.

It turns out the 2008 xB doesn't have hood release detection.  So, I guess I need to install a pin switch somewhere.  However, that leaves me without the alarm trigger wire.  The car does have a Scion Glass Break sensor (GBS ecu), but since neither that nor the Scion Security ECU (TVIP model RS2300 Plus) are standard equipment, I don't know what the Security ECU trigger wire is.  Can anybody give me a hand?

Also, I've identified a number of DEI Sensors I could install:

DEI-504D Shock Sensor

DEI-506T Glass Break Sensor  (for the Eclipse)
DEI-507M Tilt Sensor
DEI-508D Motion Sensor

Any suggestions as to my best bets among them?

Well i'm gonna guess the Scion security is not a factory installed item but a dealer installed item since they are known for buying a basic car and adding accessories when you buy it. This means some mechanic took a plug in alarm system and added it to the car so the unit is actually individual of other car components like the BCM. If this is so, somewhere there is a trigger wire on the security system that comes from the cars triggers. I would suggest a trip to your local Scion dealer and see if you can get a scematic of this alarm. There might actually be a separate input just for your sensors.

Have you tried Alldata DIY I have gotten all of the wiring schematics for my vehicles from there (the cars I own). If the alarm is a factory option it should be included in the wiring schematics for the vehicle. I currently have a 2002 Kia optima with a factory alarm system, I used my hood pin switch to add an aditional Shock sensor and an audio sensor. The major draw back to using the factory alarm is they generally don't have dual stages. Just google Alldata DIY and you can find the website.

Actually, "Mike M2"'s description is correct.  The Scion xB only has one factory installed option, that being manual Vs automatic transmission.  Everything else is defined as an accessory.  The set of vehicle schematics retrieved from Toyota's Tech website don't appear to cover any of the accessories -- I've had my nose pressed to them.  However, I'll gladly investigate "Alldata DIY" -- thanks for the link :).

Yes, the accessories can either be installed by the dealership or purchased separately and installled later.  I purchased later and installed it myself.  Scion has detailed installation instructions that can be separately downloaded from certain dealer sites, but no shematic information is included either via the kit or download.  I'll try checking with the dealer and emailing Scion to see if they can tell me anything at all about extending the Scion System (eg. lack of  hood release detection seems a significant miss).

The Scion Security ECU inserts into the existing vehicle wiring using what Toyota calls "wire-to-wire" connections -- it opens an existing vehicle harness connection and plugs into both sides -- it has four of them (2pin, 8pin, 14pin, 18pin).  Naturally, the instructions only identify the connectors by location, not by factory designation -- so I can't readily cross-reference them to the vehicle schematics.

So, thanks, I'll see what I can find out.  If you fellows have any thoughts regarding the DEI sensors I listed, I'd really appreciate your input on what might make sense (or if I should be considering something not listed) -- I've zero personal experience with vehicle security.  I've two cars under consideration, and the Eclipse should be much easier since I've detailed security system schematics and a hood pin (I installed and integrated the keyless-entry myself). Here they are again:

DEI-504D Shock Sensor

DEI-506T Glass Break Sensor
DEI-507M Tilt Sensor
DEI-508D Motion Sensor
