im just wondering what everyones opinion is of the best type of ported box for 2 12's.

Ideally they would all sound the same. A port is a port and where the port is located on the front baffle doesn't make much of a difference in most cases. There are benefits and disdvantages of each type of enclosure however. What is best will ultimately depend on your particular setup. So there is no single "best" enclosure.    
In general, it is going to usually be better to have each sub in its own chamber than having a single chamber. The number of ports does not matter but what does matter is the port area of the ports.
