I have a 2000 Ford Escort  ZX2 with an aftermarket head unit already installed (installed by the person I bought the car from) with the dash kit adapter and what not. My question is, to remove the head unit, does the adapter kit (oval part) just "pop" out or are there screws holding it in?

You will only need removal keys for the aftermarket radio.  That kit can be reused with any single din radio.  The kit itself just snaps in and you will need the ford removal keys for it.  You will also need to disconnect the A/C cable which is to the right of the gas pedal.
Do it right the first time
