i think i may have misinterpreted! my alarm locking/unlocking outputs are configured to positive, when i press to arm and hold the button down it extends the pulse to 10 seconds via the same output... can i just put a diode across lock/unlock outputs from my alarm unit?

Yes, no relay needed, just one diode.

can you tell me why a diode is needed? the ways its wired now the lock/unlock wires are separated, if i joined the lock/unlock wires via 1 diode wouldnt they then be connected?

OK, don't use a diode, watch your lock system fail...£££££ It separates the two in normal circumstances.
