I tried searching all over the place but can't seem to find a solid answer. The car is a 2001 Grand Am GT with the Monsoon system and no On Star. The stock Monsoon CD player is on the fritz and I just want to replace it with an aftermarket one. I am finding conflicting info on what harness adapter I should get. I'm mostly worried about triggering security and creating a no start condition or something like that.

If there are multiple ways to adapt the aftermarket to the monsoon system what are the caveats of each method? For example, from what I read the door chimes are a big part of the special harness but I'd rather save $40 and do without them if they are the only thing I will be missing.

Depending on the model, you may or may not have a choice in the matter. I can't remember if is 2000 or 2001 where Pontiac removed the amp turnon wire from the headunit harness and went to strictly data. If there is an amp turnon wire at the HU harness, then you can go with just a regular harness. Otherwise you will need a PAC harness ( expensive harness ).

you'll be fine with a standard harness on that car. nothing special with those cars that you lose besides r.a.p., and chimes.
