the special harness is not necessary, but it will make your life a lot easier if you have a bose system. me personally, being a professional installer, i would just run all new wire to each door and bypass the whole factory system. that way you know what is going on audio-wise.
for an acc to turn on the new deck i would use the stock ignition only to power a relay and run the real power from a higher current source because even at the ignition harness there are only low current wires. doing this will greatly lower the possibility of drawing too much power from crucial system components of the vehicle.
as far as using a sony HU, i really cant complain( never had one myself). they aren't the best in any category what so ever, but they are good all around as long as you dont go for their cheapest line of stuff. sound quality is usually lacking, equalization is usually basic, but i haven't seen many of them come back broken for no reason, but keep in mind the last time i heavily dealt with them was about 3 years ago during my circuit city days.
