Blahmonster, sorry to sound anal but relays are normally used in automotive applications to change current NOT voltage.
For your own benefit, please read the relay and diode sections, it will probably give you more confidence to do your thing.

In my opinion, if you are now wanting to add an alarm, I would go with a Viper 5701. Not much different from the 5101 you were planning to install.
