FM modulated changer ?

Quick query,

I picked up an Audiovox FM modulated CD changer,(please don't laugh, it's going in a Jeep CJ and will most likely be stolen before summer is over) and found that my HU changer control plug is the exact same as the plug that hooks the changer to the FM modulator.  My query is what are the chances that I can direct connect the changer to the HU and have it work?  What is the worst case senario if I do try this(could it hurt the HU?

  If I were you I'd give a quick call to Audiovox and verify that the protocol on the changer matches that of the head unit. Good chance they're the same.

   I'm not sure if there's a difference between the FM-modulated and CDC-controller's operating systems. The CDC units for auto manufacturers often aren't compatible with aftermarket CDC-controller heads of the same brand.

   Example: Pioneer. BMW OEM changers made by Pioneer are not compatible with Pioneer aftermarket heads, due to the different computer languages they speak (protocol).

In a quick email to AV, their response was "no", but..............the little kid in me still wants to try, any ideas on possible damage that might occur?  Thank you for your input.

   If they said no I wouldn't waste my time trying to "get it to work". They know what they're talking about. The real problem you need to address is your CJ's security. An alarm with a dual-zone microwave radar and a steel lockbox behind the backseat would probably satisfy your situation. The lockbox could store your stereo gear securely.

   To answer your question about possible damage, I think the worst-case scenario would be an "error" message when you power it up.

You are right that I shouldn't mess with trying, but sometimes I just gotta see for myself  As far as the security issue, you are also correct.  I have built a "box" for the bed that houses two woofers, two mids, two tweets, crossovers, the changer, and two amps, the rest of the bed is covered with a hinged 3/4 mdf "deck" covered in heavy rubber matting and secured by two locks.  I thought about an alarm, but I just can't bring myself to add one, first false alarm in the middle of the night and I'd be ripping it out that next morning.
