Vehicle: 1989 Cadillac Allanté
Drivers: 2 (maybe 3) Rockford Fosgate P28S8 8 inch svc 8 ohm
Amp:     Audiobahn A8000t - 400w x 1 RMS @ 4 ohm, 800w x 1 RMS @ 2 ohm
Hi guys, I want to build a box to put behind the seats on my Allanté. There is a small space behind the front seats. There is also a collapsible door for full trunk access. I originally wanted to make a ported wedge box for two subs, have the subs on the slanted part of the wedge, facing forward, and have the ports in the middle of the box pointing into the cabin
My other idea was to have the subs facing forward on the slant, but the ports or vents firing into the trunk, but i dont know if that would even sound good.
lastly, i was considering placing the speakers on the flat side of the wedge enclosure, and firing them into the trunk. dont know the benefits of either way though.
im also debating between vented and sealed. ive always liked clean tight bass, but i (mis?)understood that vented boxes give you a wider range of bass, possibly meaning i can get deeper bass notes. i figure they're 8's, if i build the box right they should be clean and tight enough since theyre so small.
Id like some advice from the experts on this forum if you would. My preferences again are clean tight bass. i dont wanna hammer the block, bust eardrums or set off car alarms, but i definitely want to hear bass even at 75mph with the top down. id prefer to get the widest range of bass possible and minimize trunk vibration. my trunk is pretty well lined to so i dont see that being an issue with 8's
so, should i fire the drivers into the cabin, into the trunk, or into the cabin with a vent firing into the trunk...
heres a crude drawing of my interpretation of a cutaway of my car. this is where i intend to put the enclosure

The ports and the sub should be on the same planar surface or at least in the same enviroment which they would not be in your description. In a convertible you are not going to get a boost from the enviroment known as a transfer function. So in my experience the added boost from the ported box is desirable if you can fit the larger box in the space. placement of the subs can vary(rear firing, forward) the real way to tell is to build a box for a driver and install in the different positions and pick which sounds best. I have a test enclosure that i use to determine best placement, it is a small 8 inch kicker powered by fosgate amp and also set of 3.5v coaxials that i have in boxes and on stands that i can attach to simulate front sound stage. BEST sound takes thought, and some trial and error/testing.
The RIGHT way is the ONLY way.
