tweeter placement

I have understood for a long while that the tweeter in a component set should be within the distance from the woofer as the diameter of the woofer (within 6.5" for 6.5" speakers, etc.) but while browsing the Focal website they suggest tweeters be high in the door or dash and every picture I saw of custom installs with their speakers have them in the "A" pillars except one or two. I have had them but have always mounted them close to the mids. Anyone have any suggestions as to where they should go from personal experience?"If a man made it, another can modify it...it just takes some thinking."
