cerwin vega amps

I am considering getting a Cerwin Vega SX500.1 as it is stable (at least the specs say that) at 1 ohm.

would this amp compare to a JL Audio JX500.1? this is only stable to 2 ohm

do amps run hotter at 1 ohm than 2? and what will demand less power the JL or the CV?

if the impedance is matched perfectly, you should have no issues of overheating. the amp will get warm from use, but not get extremely hot. when you say power, the correct teminology is "amps" if they are both 500 watts RMS they will draw the same amount of current. 500watts/12v = current in amps. from my experience, i find the JL amps are often underrated.Ted

that's my issue, to get the JL Audio JL500.1 to work coreectly with 4-10's, I need to get dual 4ohm VC subs, and JL dont make them (as I want to match my 15's) but if I go with the Cerwin Vega amp then I can get single 4 ohm VC subs (that JL does ,make) but then my amps won't match.

so is it better to get the JL subs and the CV amp or get the JL amp and some Infinity Reference subs?

anybody have some more input or experience please advise !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would choose a JL amp any day over an amp labeled with Cerwin Vega.  What do you mean when you say "work correctly"?  Of course they will work correctly.  ??Support the12volt.com

sorry, what I meant is that if I get the JL subs, they are 4ohm SVC, I can't wire them to achieve the best potential from the JL amp since it is only stable to 2ohms, if I get some CV or Infinity subs with 4ohm DVC I can wire 4 of them in a combo of series and parellel to achive the 2ohms that the JL amp will be stable at

on the flip side if I get the CV amp (or some other brand) that is stable at 1ohm, then of course I can wire the 4 subs down to the 1ohm load to get the most out of the amp. But I can't have my cake and eat it too if I go all JL. I am really a fan of Class D amps now from my experience with the JL Audio JX1000.1 that I already have.

so what it the better choice, cjange brands of subs or amp to get what I am looking for (within the same price range?

BTW: I know that Hifonics were good in teh day (80's) but are they still a decent amp? because they have alot of 1ohm stable amps. (at least they are labled that way)

This, of course, assumes that both amps have similar efficiencies. If one is a class AB amp and the other is a class D amp the class D amp will draw less current at the same output as it has a higher efficiency.Kevin Pierson

The JL amp is not "only stable at 2-ohms."  No amps work like that.  The lowest load it can handle might be 2-ohms, but you can load it with any impedance you like that is higher.  The listed impedance is the LOWEST it can handle.Support the12volt.com

I knew that, so if you know of a way to wire 4 subs that are 4ohm each down to a total of 2ohms, please share :)

the way I figure its either

1ohm- parrallel in pairs then parallel

.5ohm- parallel all the way down the line

3ohm- 3 in series and one in parallel (ouch)

4ohm- series in pairs then to parallel

re: the reason I am after a decent amp stable to 1ohm, which is why I asked about CV or Hifonics.

or else I will just oversize with a JL1000D and run at 4ohm to get 500 watts, but that's more money !

Why do you need it to be 2-ohms?  If you already have the 4 woofers and don't want to change them, wire them for 4-ohms and get an amp that puts out the power you want into 4-ohms.  It's not difficult.

And by the way your math is incorrect.  4 X 4-ohm SVC woofers all in parallel creates a 1-ohm net.  Not 0.5 ohms.  Your options are 1-ohm, 4-ohms, or 16-ohms.
