97 olds aurora, dash lights out

A friend of mine connected the dimmer wire to a ground on a 97 olds aurora,And guess what!!!! the dash lights only work with the auto headlights off.I have checked all fuses and relays with no luck.any sugg. would be great

Look harder for a blown fuse.  I will check for fusebox locations for you.  Until then, which fusebox did you check?

1. Disconnect the instrument panel (IP) compartment lamp switch connector.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position.
  3. Connect a fused jumper between the IP compartment lamp switch connector terminal?B (BLK) and ground.
Does the IP compartment lamp light?
Go to Step?3 Go to Step?4
3 Test CKT?150 (BLK) for an open. Refer to Testing for Continuity in Wiring Systems.Is CKT?150 OK? Go to Step?8 Go to Step?7
4 Test CKT?39 (PNK) for an open or a short to ground between S215 and the IP compartment lamp. Refer to Testing for Continuity or Testing for Short to Ground in Wiring Systems.Is CKT?39 OK? Go to Step?5 Go to Step?7
5 Test CKT?157 (GRY) for an open. Refer to Testing for Continuity in Wiring Systems.Is CKT?157 OK? Go to Step?6 Go to Step?7
6 Replace the IP compartment lamp. Refer to Instrument Panel Compartment Lamp Replacement or Instrument Panel Compartment Lamp Replacement .Is the repair complete? Go to Interior Lights Dimming System Check
7 Repair the suspect wiring. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.Is the repair complete? Go to Interior Lights Dimming System Check
8 Replace the IP compartment lamp switch.Is the repair complete? Go to Interior Lights Dimming System Check

under the back seat 2 locations, next to the drivers left knee under dash and under hood behind passenger headlight. checked every fuse wit a meter.

Thanks for the repl, it ended up being the rheostat for the lighting.
